Artist Bio
Born in a suburb of Paris in 1808, Borget was a banker before he became a professional artist in 1829. In 1836, he embarked on a world tour and visited America, the south China coast, the Pilippines and India. For ten months from 1838 to 1839 Borget was in Hong Kong, Macao and Guangzhou where he did many paintings of landscape and everyday life. These were later made into engravings and published in the journal in which the artist recorded what he saw in China.

Description
This colour lithograph depicts agricultural land allegedly in the Wong Nai Chung Valley. In the centre, a bamboo pipe connected to a little canal on the summit forms an aqueduct conveying water across the valley to fertilise the land, and the picture thus reflects Chinese wisdom in solving daily problems.
